For an animated movie I really enjoyed it and I love how it explores a broken relationship.

This nostalgia-driven film is full *touch and *power, with plenty of humor and just enough nods to earlier property pieces.
As a kid one of my favorite cartoons was The Transformers. I was surprised by the 2006 trailer for the 2007 Shia LaBeouf-led Transformers movie – and was pumped. Although the film series has had its ups and downs, 1986’s animated installment was one of the better films from the franchise. Then, there was the announcement of an animated origin story to be released in 2024. Like all of the live action films, Michael Bay’s name was attached to it. My thoughts were, “this could be enjoyable, or it could be a steaming mess”.

An impressive voice cast was assembled, and they did an admirable job injecting humor into the film. Although others have voiced Optimus Prime, it’s still a bit odd to hear someone aside from Peter Cullen giving the “roll out” command. For diehard Cullen fans, it will be difficult to hear Chris Hemsworth battle his Australian accent, but it’s fine for an origin story showcasing a youthful Orion Pax/Optimus Prime.

Action sequences are what you would expect from a computer-animated cartoon. I guess I’m old school with Transformers, I’d prefer to see them in traditional animation. That said, One’s animation doesn’t tax the eyes like some computer-generated films.

The film is promoted as an origin story with a heavy focus on the relationship between Optimus Prime and Megatron. The two are buds… brothers who’ve got each other’s backs. But the two take different paths when they find out the leader they trusted betrayed their civilization. Prime becomes the honorable leader he was meant to be. And Megatron becomes the scourge he was meant to be. While it is a cartoon, the film delves into Megatron’s rage and its manifestation from workers being abused by unscrupulous leaders – relatively deep stuff.

Transformers One is not the same level animated film as Sony’s Spider-verse franchise, but it’s pretty darn solid. I love the subtle references to the 1986 movie as well as other Easter eggs. If they don’t rush the sequel (and yes, I assume there will be one based off of the post credit scene), there’s a real opportunity to make something special. I’ll be at the theater opening weekend for Transformers Two.
