After Simba and Nala have their cub Kiara, Rafiki shares the story of her grandfather Mufasa's youth. Mufasa, raised by his parents Masego and Afia, is swept away by a flood and meets Taka, a royal cub who saves him. Taka's mother, Queen Eshe, adopts Mufasa, but his father, King Obasi, disapproves. Mufasa and Taka grow close, but when they face a white lion attack, Mufasa protects Eshe, while Taka retreats, angering his father. The white lions, led by Kiros, seek revenge, killing Obasi and chasing Mufasa and Taka.
The brothers, along with Sarabi and Zazu, find refuge with Rafiki on their journey to the mythical land Milele. Taka secretly aids Kiros, leading to a battle in which Taka’s betrayal is revealed. Mufasa fights the white lions and, despite Taka’s earlier treachery, shows him mercy. Taka receives a scar in the struggle, and the cave floods, killing the white lions. Mufasa and Sarabi survive and are crowned King and Queen.
Mufasa confronts Taka about his betrayal, renaming him Scar. Mufasa ascends Pride Rock, where Kiara roars triumphantly as the spirit of her grandfather watches over her.
