Eddie Barrish, unable to repair his van, can't pick up his daughter, Sarah. Desperate, he steals a mechanic's wallet, buys lottery tickets, calls for loans, and searches for cars to rob. Apologizing to Sarah, he finds an unlocked 'Dolus' luxury SUV but only steals sunglasses. When he tries to leave, the car locks, trapping him inside.
The car receives a call, which Eddie ignores while trying to escape, injuring himself and losing signal. He answers the call from William, the owner, who shocks him with tasers. Watching through hidden cameras, William reveals the Dolus was designed as a trap after six break-ins.
Eddie shoots at the bulletproof glass, but the ricochet injures his leg. The tinted, soundproof car prevents anyone from hearing his cries. William demands conversation and reveals he's a wealthy doctor. Eddie passes out from blood loss, and upon waking, finds his wounds treated but remains trapped.
The next day, Eddie ignores William's talk about his daughter, enduring shocks, freezing air, and yodeling music. By night, Eddie apologizes, and William reveals he's calling from a nearby condo. With terminal cancer, William seeks justice and offers Eddie freedom if he proves this is his first crime, subjecting him to intense heat.
Starving and dehydrated, Eddie gives his personal info, and William directs him to water. Eddie scratches off his last lottery ticket and wins, apologizing to William, who gives him a cookie. Eddie then realizes he can access the car's electrical system below the glovebox and tries to reach the circuits with his foot.
The next day, delirious, Eddie drinks his own urine. That night, he thinks he’s started the car, but William remotely pilots it, sending Eddie on a wild ride. William crushes two muggers with the car, ignoring Eddie's pleas. The joyride ends abruptly, knocking Eddie unconscious.
The next day, Eddie learns William tracked Sarah and tries to run her over. Eddie threatens to shoot himself, but the gun is unloaded. Sarah is spared, and Eddie destroys the car's cameras, sending her a farewell message. William arrives to continue Eddie's punishment, cuffing him to the dashboard and driving them out of the city, and then to kill him and dispose of his body. He explains that Emma was killed during a robbery attempt, fueling him to carry out his plan. Eddie disconnects the car's power causing it to fly off the roadway. The gun discharges in the chaos and the bullet strikes William.
Eddie frees himself, attacks William, and receives a call from Sarah. As the car catches fire, Eddie begs William to unlock it, but he dies. Eddie breaks out, is rescued, and returns to the shop with his winnings. Unable to repair the van, he buys a bike for Sarah and rides it to school, reuniting with her.
