In 1998 New York City, Henry “Hank” Thompson is a former baseball phenom whose career was derailed by a drunk-driving accident that killed his friend and crippled his leg. Now he works as a bartender, drinking heavily and trying to live a quiet life with his girlfriend Yvonne. One day, his eccentric punk-rock neighbor Russ asks Hank to watch over his cat, Bud, while Russ flies to London. Hank reluctantly agrees.
But the favor spirals into chaos when two Russian mobsters show up, violently demanding something Russ has stolen. Hank is beaten, threatened, and pulled into a treacherous web involving missing money, underworld dealings, and rival criminal factions. Soon, Hasidic gangster brothers Lipa and Shmully, a corrupt detective Elise Roman, and drug kingpin Colorado all converge on him. When Yvonne is murdered and Hank realizes many of his allies are betrayers, he fights back.
Hank tracks down Russ, recovers a hidden key tied to millions in stolen funds, and maneuvers to pit the gangs against each other. In a final showdown, Hank kills his enemies, fakes his own identity by assuming Russ’s persona, and escapes to Tulum, Mexico, sending the remaining money home to his mother.
