Moana 2 was fun but nowhere near as good as the first.

I don't remember much about the original Moana, but it wouldn't have to do much to be better than this one. Moana 2 is just plain dull.
Moana 2 was originally conceived as an animated series for Disney+ until news broke in February 2024 that it would be reworked into a film and released in November of the same year. That said, Moana 2 isn’t a great film. There – I said it. My memories of the first film are far more positive than those of the sequel. Moana 2 falls squarely into the dreaded “the sequel is never equal” category. Even with its musical numbers, I don’t see people humming catchy tunes from it the way they did with "You're Welcome" from the first.

Most of what this movie does is flat—not necessarily bad, just flat. The audience didn’t react to the humor as it should in a children’s film, and I found nothing about it particularly witty (except for one thing). It’s hard to gauge voice acting, but I’m going to say it—don’t chastise me—Dwayne Johnson elevates what would otherwise be a fairly mundane movie. The action level is what you’d expect from an animated film, but one thing that stood out to me was the rendering of each character’s hair, especially during the action sequences. Truly amazing. The story itself seems ill-conceived; perhaps it would’ve fared better as the animated series originally planned. The mid-credit scene introduces the big bad, echoing Thanos' introduction in The Avengers. While the scene is a fun nod to another franchise, I don’t see it leading anywhere.

The ideas and efforts behind Moana 2 feel lazy (though I’m sure many people worked hard to make it). Some kids will enjoy it, as it’s an animated movie made by Disney. I realize I’m not the target demographic, but I’ll have a difficult time seeing Moana 3, if it ever gets made.
