I can smell what the Rock is cooking - and it's a hot mess. Johnson may not be in a khaki safari fit, but expect more of the same shenanigans and you'll do just fine watching it (I did).
Where do I start with Red One? I first heard about this movie over two years ago when filming began. The cast included Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, and J.K. Simmons, with a projected release date of Christmas 2023 on Prime Video. Then came the 2023 strikes, which delayed the film to 2024. Eventually, it found a distributor for a theatrical release.

The story follows some familiar plots where Santa goes missing or gives up—but, true to The Rock style, it’s full of plot holes. Even though Johnson isn’t wearing a khaki safari uniform, the comedy and action tropes are very much in line with his usual films. Many of the film’s devices are borrowed from various Marvel installments, including Ant-Man and Thor (you’d almost think Chris Evans was behind this). The movie starts to feel like a mashup of about ten other films.

Red One keeps a consistent pace with its humor. Sometimes it lands (if you’re okay with goofy, not clever humor), and sometimes it just falls flat. The action can feel a bit bloated at times, but there’s not much in the way of lulls. Don’t expect to see people sleeping through it. Let’s not forget, it’s a Dwayne Johnson movie. The acting isn’t great, but it’s exactly what you’d expect. It’s a kid-friendly (if you’re okay with some curse words) Christmas movie about Santa, so don’t go in expecting high drama.

Red One is truly a red-hot mess. If you can stomach a typical Dwayne Johnson movie with a Christmas spin, then this is the flick for you. It’s going to be one of those movies I’ll see playing on basic cable during the Christmas season, and I’ll watch— even if I catch it in the middle—and slog my way through it.
