Chris and Mackenzie are a father and daughter duo that share a love for movies. As a Gen Xer, Chris grew up with an appreciation for action and adventure movies from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. In the late 00s, he found the concept of a shared cinematic universe intriguing and started to closely follow the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When Mackenzie, a Gen Zer, became old enough to watch and enjoy movies, she joined Chris at the theater for new MCU releases. She was hooked from day one.
Over time, Mackenzie began to ask Chris which Marvel movie was his favorite. Endless discussions were had about which movie was superior, and which was not so superior. Finally, the two decided to devise a rating system to rank the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. After trial and error, the two agreed that the rating system should be partially dependent on heart, and partially dependent on mind. Although the rating matrix has evolved over time, the spirit of the exercise remains the same.
In 2020 the world paused, and so did the ability to watch movies at the theater. As many did, Chris and Mackenzie turned to streaming services to watch movies of the past. When theaters reopened, they were first in line to experience the big screen and gorge themselves on hot-buttered popcorn. Soon after, they decided to expand their rating system to new movies viewed at the theater. In 2022 they saw 22 new releases at the theater. In 2023 that number grew to 44 and was followed by the same pace to start 2024. Chris began posting their reviews on social media, and people began asking for a repository of the data. And that’s how REEL DETAILS started.
