*Sonny Hayes, an aging American and former F1 prodigy, lives as a racer-for-hire after injuries ended his career in the ‘90s. Struggling with gambling and failed marriages, Sonny is approached by Rubén Cervantes, his old teammate and owner of the struggling APXGP F1 Team. Rubén needs Sonny to help win one of the remaining races to save the team. Sonny reluctantly agrees, hoping to prove himself the best again.
At Silverstone, Sonny meets rookie Joshua Pearce and the team staff. Despite early struggles with modern F1 cars, Sonny’s raw talent earns him a seat. Tensions flare when Sonny ignores team orders and collides with Joshua in their first race. They reconcile when Sonny helps Joshua score APXGP’s first points by manipulating race safety cars. They adopt each other’s methods to improve the car and themselves.
During a rain-soaked Italian Grand Prix, Joshua’s risky move against Sonny’s advice ends in a fiery crash. Sonny rescues him, but Joshua blames Sonny and vows revenge. Returning at Spa, Joshua crashes Sonny out. A poker game for team priority ensues; Joshua wins, unaware Sonny threw the game. Meanwhile, team politics surface as Rubén is framed for illegal upgrades by board member Peter Banning, who wants to sell the team.
Before the final race in Abu Dhabi, Joshua admits fault for his crash and commits to teamwork. Sonny rejects Peter’s offer to betray Rubén and races again. The FIA clears the car upgrades. In the race, Sonny sacrifices his own win to block rivals and help Joshua, but a last-lap collision leaves Sonny to take victory himself, saving the team. Rubén joins him on the podium, celebrating their redemption. Joshua declines an offer from Mercedes, Sonny and Kate confirm their relationship, and Sonny rides off to new adventures.
